Research Paper : Ubiquitous Citizen Programming, Dave Mason, Ryerson University, Toronto M5B 2K3, Canada

Summary

This paper talks about the different systems and methods available to make programming accessible to all. It mentions a term called Citizen Programming that is used to categorize amateur programmers that have little to zero knowledge of programming and who would use this as a means to solve their daily problems. This is explained using an example of how having relevant data about the potholes found in their everyday journey can help citizen programmers identify a correlation between potholes and burnt-out street lights, leading them to discover some really important information about the root cause of such problems.

It talks about the enormous amount of data generated worldwide through google searches, automobiles or sensors, etc. which can bring a vast number of opportunities to use this data for analysis and build innovative solutions. Thus, having these systems can help bring out new solutions to existing problems that could be ignored or passed over by professional programmers.

My Two Cents

Platforms that can help you to learn programming are definitely more now than ever. You can use these platforms to learn and find solutions to your everyday problems. For example, using stock data to analyze investments or using historic data of your locality to predict the success of a new business venture. Analyzing data by yourself could help you learn and improve your business. I would suggest using Tableau - a data visualization platform that can help you to start with something basic and gain insights from your data like your daily expenditure.

To begin with, sign up for a free Tableau public account and learn from the different visualizations available and try to play around with them to create your own (not sponsored just genuine love towards the platform).
